2024 Upper Peninsula: wilderness

Unfortunately the photographs can't capture the utter quietness of the wilderness lakes.

Isle Royale (not)

Alas, the ferry to the island was cancelled because of high winds on Lake Superior, so all I got was this gloomy photo of Lake Superior, taken near Copper Harbor.

Seney National Wildlife Refuge: habitat for 200 species of birds

In the early 1900s, the land was logged, and then drained for farming. When the farming failed, it became the property of the State, which has endeavoured to restore it, and made it a wildlife refuge (by 1935, the largest water bird in North America, the trumpeter swan, and many other birds were almost extinct in most of the United States). Now it belongs to the wildlife, except we are permitted to cycle to the ponds along the access roads.

The weather was wet and gloomy all day, but towards evening I caught this glimpse of blue sky over one of the ponds. 2023.

Kayaking on Wilderness Lakes (only the swish of the paddle and the call of the loon)

Beauty has long since disappeared. It has slipped beneath the surface of the noise---the noise of words, the noise of cars, the noise of music, the noise of signs---we live in constantly. It has sunk as deep as Atlantis. The only thing left of it is the word, whose meaning loses clarity from year to year. (Milan Kundera, The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, 4,17)
